Research and Professional Endeavors
In recent years my time devoted to professional development has involved investigations in map accuracy and cartographic presentation. In the broad area of map accuracy, I have concentrated on a study of the changes in leg al precedents that have emerged from increasing litigation involving inaccurate nautical and aeronautical charts. Also I have been involved in a range of activity in Global Positioning Systems technology for mapping and for testing map accuracy. In the area of cartographic presentation, I have been exploring different methods of computer animation for visualizing the Honolulu downtown in 1855. In conjunction with the State of Hawai`i I have been working on a metadata study that is developing a data base on spatial data and producing a newsletter on Hawai'i spatial data.
Professional Cartography:
The bulk of professional material that I have produced is in the area of atlas
production and consulting and in the preparation of thematic map s to support
faculty research. In my time in Hawai`i I have been involved in 13 atlas
projects in roles ranging from Director to Consultant. Included in list are
both editions of the Atlas of Hawai`i, A Coral Reef Atlas of West Hawai`i,
The Coastal Z one Management Atlas of American Samoa, Kauai: A Coastal Resource
Inventory, Molokai: A Coastal Resource Inventory, Pohnpei: A Coastal Resource
Inventory, and An Atlas of Nearby Galaxies,

Graduate Activities
I have supervised graduate programs that have involved topics ranging from mapping bird habitats on Lysan Island to investigation of the precision of underwater topographic mapping. I have recently directed graduate seminars in Cartographic literature and Computer Animation. I plan to expand these offerings into GPS research and Legal Aspects of Mapping. I am particularly interested in working with any student who has an interest in map design, map accuracy, and map application.
